What is Job Shadowing?

Job Shadowing introduces you to potential careers by allowing you to shadow individual business professionals (mentors) and observe their daily routines and activities for 1-2 days.

Through this program you will have the opportunity to "shadow" career practitioners in various job-related aspects, ask questions and clarify your career concerns. Job shadowing will help you achieve a better understanding of various careers by experiencing them before hand, and gain an insight on what this profession is in real life, and thus focus on your career goals.

Why Job Shadowing?
  • Explore career options of your choice
  • Find out what the field you are interested in is really like in real life
  • Make well informed career decisions
  • Know what is needed to prepare for a career in your field of choice
  • Deepen your understanding of the demands, rewards, and challenges of a chosen career
  • Gain an overview of the world of work and career opportunities available to you
  • Formulate realistic career goals
  • Promote your career development and personal growth
  • Develop a network of career contacts

How to apply for a Job Shadowing Experience?

  • Set an appointment with Maha El Moslemany, experiential learning officer, (tel: 202.2797.5782) to discuss your career concerns.
  • Develop your resume.
  • Fill out a Job Shadowing Application Form indicating your career concerns.
  • You will be matched with a mentor. Matching is based on a combination of factors such as career interests and academic major.
  • Once the match has been made, your mentor will be provided with your name, career interest and resume.
  • You will be notified once a job shadow appointment has been set up.

What's after Job Shadowing?

  • Meet with Maha El Moslemany to discuss your job shadowing experience outcomes, and address further inquiries.
  • Write a thank you note to your mentor and submit a copy to CAPS office.
  • Complete an on-line evaluation form about your experience.

Your Feedback Counts…

The student evaluation is your chance to let us know what you thought of the program, ways that it can be improved, whether the matching to your mentor was appropriate, and what you liked the most about the program. It is important that you bring your evaluation back after your job shadowing experience, as it confirms that the visit has taken place. If you did not visited your mentor, you will be required to send an apology letter.
